Pollinator Landscaping Project

Our pollinator landscaping project for the east parking lot islands is almost complete!

Last August the Church Council met and approved a plan and provided a budget that Marj and Larry Burfiend and Mary Gunness designed for the project.

The goal was to replace the landscaping in two islands in the east parking lot with pollinator friendly, drought tolerant, low maintenance and salt resistant plants.  The project would also refurbish the other two long islands. The larger island was planned as a more formal setting and the one long island as a pollinator garden.

The first task was to put down black plastic last fall to kill the grass and weeds.  In mid May the selection of which plants to use was finalized.

With the help of Tom Marshall and Ron Colburn the plastic was removed and approximately 100 new plants were planted in one week.  The hardest task was transplanting the existing Drop Seed Grass due to the large number of tree roots.

The mulch was applied the first week of June.

This project will be completed on schedule and under budget!

The rock in the big island was donated by the Gunness family and many of the pollinator plants were donated by the Burfeind family.

Thank you to everyone who worked on this project for everyone (including our pollinators!) to enjoy!
